Notes: Original image is 3.7 MB. HCS 1/14/2022. Image at Stanford site. See also Goldbaum and Huffman's 2012 book, Waiting for the Cars, p. 278. The authors note that the railroad climbs 1,147 feet between Truckee and the Summit. They further explain that the railroad engineers found a line for 14 miles of railroad by "folding" it into a long "S" curve running deep into Coldstream Valley, then around the "nose" of Schallenberger Ridge. Of added note, the sawmill on the far track marks Stanford, a station named for Leland Stanford's brother, Phillip Stanford, the mill's proprietor. Although long gone, the name has stuck - the "Stanford Curve", also known as curve no. 385. See also LUM0018.
