Tunnel no. 12 is 262 feet long and leads the railroad into Strong's Canyon. The authors explain that in the spring of 1868 some 3,000 men using powder and shovels cleared snow and ice from the railroad between Cisco and tunnel no. 12 so that grading could be finished, and track finally built to close the gap. Once closed, the CP finally had a continuous railroad extending some 175 miles from Sacramento to a point well beyond Reno.
