When the railroad was constructed the mountain was called Crested Peak. Today it is called Donner Peak. Tunnel no. 11 is 325 feet long, partly curved, was worked from both ends, and was the last tunnel to be completed. The authors explain that in 1993 SP abandoned the line and funneled all traffic through adjacent tunnel no. 41 built in 1925. The railroad descends towards to the Truckee River around Schallenberger Ridge. At the time of building, however, this ridge was known as Lake Ridge, also known as Donner's Backbone. Schallenberger Ridge today memorializes Moses Schallenberger, who at 18 years old survived the winter by himself at the lake.
