This view looks down from the Sierra crest above Summit Tunnel (no. 6) towards Donner Lake, more than 1,000 feet below. The nearly finished railroad grade runs along this photo's right-hand side from the wagon road crossing in the foreground to the mouth of tunnel no. 7. Although difficult to see, the visitors are standing immediately north of the intersection of the wagon road and the railroad grade. Just beyond is tunnel no. 8.
