Notes: Original image is 3.5 MB. Image at Stanford site. Also a Carleton Watkins attribution. HCS 1/13/2022. See also Goldbaum and Huffman's 2012 book, Waiting for the Cars, p. 246. The authors note that this photograph was taken looking west from on top of tunnel no. 7. The authors further note that wagon is heading down the road toward the railroad grade. Once you reach the crossing, the road turns right to continue toward Donner Lake. This original tunnel remained in service until July 1993 when the track was removed and all traffic was directed through a new second-tracking 1925 tunnel.
