Notes: Original image is 3.6 MB. HCS 1/13/2022. Image at Stanford site. See also Goldbaum and Huffman's 2012 book, Waiting for the Cars, p. 238. The authors noted that "Summit Tunnel was the longest on the railroad, extending 1,659 feet from end to end. To hasten construction, a shaft was sunk 73 feet form the surface to the level of the tunnel, allowing crews to work outward from the center as well as inward from the ends. Excavating the shaft began in late August 1866."
