Notes: Original image is 7.9 MB. HCS 7/2023. Upon examination of the full resolution image, you can tell the date of this image is in the very late 1890s or more probably the early 1900s because between the 2 wooden structures on the right, you can definitely see the enclosed Rocking Stone Tower with its arched columns. You may also be able to see a part of the footbridge which connected the McGlashan Mansion with the Rocking Stone Tower. McGlashan housed his Butterfly Collection and Donner Party relics in the Tower. This cdnc.ucr.edu November 20, 1901 Truckee Republican article references that the mansion is almost completed for occupancy. The Rocking Stone Tower was erected in 1893 as evidenced in this Grass Valley Morning Union February 4, 1894 article, p. 10, col. 3, The Sierra’s Marvel, which reports that the tower was neat, tasteful, and costly, and erected for the purpose of enclosing McGlashan’s various collections. See this link. Also see this link. Conclusion: this photo was taken AFTER 1900 because the 14 column Rocking Stone Tower was already enclosed. Secondly, we know that the 2nd floor of the Old Jail was added in 1901, so this image is dated AFTER 1901. It has been reported earlier - erroneously - that this image was taken in the 1870s. This is incorrect based on the surrounding image structures.
