Photographer/artist: Alfred A. Hart Date taken: 1868 Photo location: Truckee River
Type: photo Subject: Transcontinental Railroad Construction County: Placer
Source: Stanford CollectionReferences: Contributor: Stanford Libraries
Notes: Original image is 4 MB. HCS 1/14/2022. Image at Stanford site. See also Goldbaum and Huffman's 2012 book, Waiting for the Cars, p. 286. Enhanced at high resolution, a viewer can barely make out what appears to be ladies in long dresses on the locomotive San Mateo, suggesting a possible Sunday train excursion. Notably, this image is taken from almost the same place as Hart's image no. 221 except looking east. To see a higher resolution image, visit Stanford's online image. See also Glenn Willumson, Iron Muse (UC Press Berkeley 2013), p. 75. Some authors suggest that Hart's image shows the San Mateo locomotive on the isolated track.
